Growing In Grace

"When you love the life you live...you will live the life you love." - Yolanda.

Today, while cleaning out old photographs—a task close to my heart as a photographer—I began scanning them into a digital folder to chronicle life through my lens. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by memories, my dog watched over me as each photo sparked a vivid recollection of moments frozen in time.

One of my favorite photos captures our model adorned in our stunning emerald green eye color during the holiday season. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the gratitude I feel for that remarkable journey and the time in my life that shaped me.

As I journeyed through these images, I thought about how, during this holiday season, we will join family and friends in taking long walks down memory lane, discovering the spaces in our hearts where we can grow in grace.

As the year draws to a close, I hope that we all take a moment to reflect on the past year or even the years before, recognizing opportunities to grow in grace.

This walk down memory lane comes as I prepare to head home for the holidays, much like many of you. It serves as a poignant reminder that while there may be empty seats at the table, the memories we hold are still alive and very vibrant.

One of my favorite quotes on gratitude comes from Zig Ziglar: "Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for."

Sorting through those photo files reminded me of the people, places, careers, and trailblazing opportunities I’ve been blessed with, alongside the gratitude that enriches my life.

This year, our family will gather, share stories, and give thanks for a future brimming with love, peace, joy, and hope.

Looking ahead, I know that grace and gratitude will continue to flourish. Like a plant, the more we nurture it, the more it thrives. In 2025, I plan to start a gratitude jar to capture all those daily moments I am thankful for.

So, what does it mean to grow in grace? Grace and gratitude are inseparable. Grace embodies love and favor given without condition, while gratitude reflects the appreciation for life’s goodness and the people and things that lend our lives meaning.

As you gather with your loved ones this Thanksgiving, embrace the opportunity to stroll down memory lane, acknowledging the grace you’ve given and have received, and expressing gratitude for this day and all the days to come.

The WEBB Advisory Group

The WEBB Center for Social Impact was created and shaped by over 50 years of lived experience as a Black woman in America.

Focusing on domestic policy specifically, our institute provides a global worldview perspective for black and brown women from the diaspora living in America today.

Using research data, lived experiences, and stories of impact, policymakers and leaders can understand the social impacts various policies have on black and brown children and women, today and tomorrow.

In response to various incidents in our country's recent history, history mustn't repeat itself.  Therefore, the WEBB Center For Social Impact strives to provide voter information, information on issues for policymakers, information for community activists, and information for anyone who seeks to understand the social impacts of public policy on individuals and communities.

Attention Bias

What is attention bias? Attention bias is our tendency to prioritize certain types of stimuli/information over others. At any given moment, an individual's senses can perceive countless stimuli in our immediate surroundings. Threat-related attention bias refers to the tendency to prioritize the processing of threats over benign or neutral stimuli. Is it no wonder we have biases related to race, ethnicity, disability, and more?

Each of us individually generates more information than ever before in human history. We take in almost 90,000 pieces of information daily, yet our brains can only filter in about 10 percent of that information. The rest, well is stored in our subconscious minds and often when we perceive a threat we act upon it.

How do you perceive the world around you and how can you understand your attention bias?

Most of all, thank you for your unconditional love and support, which has seen us through every challenge and kept us going. You are an ever-present source of comfort and hope, and we are deeply grateful for all that you have done for us. Thank you, for this gift of life and for the abundance that we have. And thank you for the gift of the lives of all whom we treasure as family and friends, and the lives of all humanity who we know as our brothers and sisters. Amen.
