Privilege...Giving Thanks

SMART TALK...Conversations That Matter

As we prepare to give thanks for all we have, I want to share a few thoughts on the privilege of expressing gratitude. Tomorrow, thousands of our fellow citizens will gather to share a meal, often without the comfort of family, but surrounded by others facing similar challenges.

What do those who are homeless—living on the streets and possibly struggling with addiction or mental health issues—have to be thankful for?

Many of us may never fully understand the struggles of those who have lost their way. Yet, perhaps they find gratitude in being offered a meal, having a warm place to rest, or simply witnessing another sunrise and sunset.

This week, I am reading "In the World, But Not Of It" by David R. Hawkins, which explores transforming everyday experiences into a spiritual journey.

As we enter this holiday weekend, let’s approach those we encounter on the street with compassion, viewing these moments as part of our spiritual path. We can extend blessings to those we meet by whispering silent prayers for their well-being.

One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., reminds us: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

I’ll conclude this gratitude post with an excerpt from my upcoming book, "The Power of Ouch: Lessons in Hope From Hurt." May it inspire you this Thanksgiving and holiday season to recognize the glorious privilege of giving thanks:

"I can choose to think thoughts that are depressing, self-defeating, caustic, belittling, evil, or hate-filled, or I can choose thoughts of love for myself and others—thoughts of peace, joy, hope, and strength. I am either my own worst enemy or my own best friend."

This Thanksgiving, I choose to love both myself and you enough to make a positive difference in the world.

*P.S. Those are sample book covers throughout this blog; we’re working on perfecting the cover design.*

Happy Thanksgiving!
